PHYSIOTHERapY
A horse is an athlete, having to perform almost every day. Human top-class sportsmen training on a daily basis are accompanied by a whole team of physiotherapists and other professionals to help them keep their body in optimal shape. The same goes for sport horses: daily exercise and the strain of carrying a rider on their back can lead to severe muscular and articular problems if they do not get proper support.
Even leisure horses can suffer from musculoskeletal problems if their musculature is not adapted to the required exercise level.
Lameness or stiffness can be caused by many problems other than tendon or joint injuries . They can also be the result of underlying problems in the neck, the back or in the peripheral nerves. That is why I believe it is essential to look at each horse in a global way, and to combine the medical examination with an assessment of the musculoskeletal system.
I am a certified equine physiotherapist, having completed the official Animal Physiotherapy specialisation course at the Veterinary faculty of Ghent University.
